Early Thanksgiving Celebration

Sunday afternoon we all went to my sister's house for an early Thanksgiving dinner.  What a great day!

It was so warm that day--I think it was almost 80 degrees.  The kids had on summer clothes and loved playing outside.

Thank you, Mario & Mic, for hosting.
We enjoyed it so much!
Sweet Kids
Thankful for each one!
Mom made my traditional Red Velvet birthday cake and made Jeryn's favorite, buttermilk pie.  Delicious as always!  Thanks, Mom!

two pecan pies, buttermilk pie, pumpkin pie and red velvet cake.
I was excited about the small leaf cookie cutters that I found to use on the pie crust...but most of the leaves had fallen off by the time I made it to Mic's house.  Oh well--at least it looked cute for a picture right out of the oven.  I also think I made it too spicy (Per Lane.  I don't like pumpkin pie so I can't tell a good one from a bad one).
THANKFUL FOR FAMILY!!!

My Birthday

Last Saturday was my birthday.  It was also the day the tree farm opened, and we always like to go out early to tag our favorite tree.  Lane had worked Friday night so he didn't get to go, but the kids and I made a trip to the farm that morning to find the "perfect" tree to cut down the first week of December.  Now not everyone agreed on a tree (as you'll see in the photos below), but I think it will look really pretty.  I'm looking forward to having the house decorated.

The tree farm also has a fall pumpkin patch, although we've never gone there for that.  They did still have some fall things on display though, and since we had such a non-festive pumpkin picking experience this year, we stopped for a few photos:
Look How Tall This Fall
I loved the green cart full of pumpkins and the picnic bench in the leaves.
We searched two fields to make sure we had seen all our options.
Finally Rhett and I kind of had it narrowed down to two tall, full trees.  I asked the kids to vote on tree A or tree B.  Alexee crossed her arms and said, "tree C".  Rhett tried to reason with her by listing all the fine points of the tree he wanted.  Crosby voted and then ran off to the hay maze.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree!
We tied our ribbon to it and moved on to see the animals.  We were waiting for hot chocolate at the snack shack when Rhett got stung by a yellow jacket.  He was tough, but it was hurting.  The nice lady at the snack shack gave him some ice and sent him to the main building to get some medicine and a bandaid to put on the sting.
That afternoon Rhett went to a friend's house and Alexee & Crosby played outside while I started cooking some things for our early Thanksgiving meal at my sister's house on Sunday.  I was nervous about trying to make Grandmother's dressing.  I also took cranberry fluff and a pumpkin pie and whipped cream.
This is something my Great-Grandmother Beulah always made for the holidays:
That evening the kids and I went to eat pizza with my friend Lianne and her family--visiting from TX--and a few other friends too.  It was fun to catch up.  I'm so glad I could hang out with them on my birthday!  Lianne gave me a really cute scarf and chalkboard tray--so sweet!  :)
Our neighborhood has been so pretty with fall color this week!  I took a few pictures from the car window.  I think we live in such a beautiful state!
Monday night Lane and I went out for a birthday dinner at one of our favorite places--Loca Luna.  We get birthday e-mails from them (for a free entree), so we usually try to schedule a time to go!  We had a great time.
And then I forgot to have the waiter take a picture, but Emily organized a belated birthday lunch at Local Lime today with a few friends.  More great company and more great food...feeling really blessed!  :)

This Week

A few things about the week:

1.  I had a terrible toothache (trouble started two+ weeks ago but it got way worse last weekend).  My dentist was so kind to see me on short notice Monday morning and told me exactly what I was afraid of: a root canal is needed.  I had one when Alexee was a newborn, and that was more than enough.  Not looking forward to that appointment next week.  Someone did just me that root canals have improved...I hope that's true!  Thankfully I started feeling a LOT better within 48 hours of starting an antibiotic.

2.  The kids put up the playroom Christmas tree one day this week.  Rhett assembled the tree and did the lights, and Alexee and Crosby did a lot of the decorating!
3.  Alexee and her friend Addison gave our guinea pig a bath after school one day.  They even used the hair dryer to make him fluffy.  There was lots of giggling going on!  :)
They are also writing a book together.  Here's a sneak peak:
This is my favorite page so far.
4.  Wednesday night we took dinner to Jillian & Kyle.  We were so excited to get to meet their new baby boy, Jack!  We took ham & poppyseed sandwiches, Connie's mandarin orange salad, chips with corn and black bean salsa and 4-Layer Delight for dessert.

4 Layer Delight
-First layer:
1 stick butter, softened
1 1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup chopped pecans
Mix and pat into 13x9" pan.  Bake at 350 for 20 minutes.

-Second Layer:
1 package cream cheese
1 cup powdered sugar
8 oz. Cool Whip
Mix and spread over cooled crust.

-Third Layer:
1 large box chocolate pudding (instant), mixed as directed on package.
Spread over cream cheese layer.

-Fourth Layer:
Top with Cool Whip (I used remaining 8 oz.) and chopped nuts or chocolate shavings.

Refrigerate.
Their sweet baby is so precious!  I loved getting to hold him.  Alexee was very fascinated with him and wanted Jillian to show her his hands, feet, fingers...everything!  I guess she was too young to remember Crosby as a newborn (she had just turned 2), so she was very curious about what Mrs. Jillian's baby could do, etc.  She asked if he could crawl.  :)  The boys each took a turn holding him too, although Crosby seemed much more interested in the buttons on their recliner-ha!  What an exciting (and exhausting!!) time for them.  It brought back memories of bringing Rhett home from the hospital...boy were we overwhelmed!  (How on earth could that have been almost a decade ago?!)

What a blessing to know the Boyingtons!
5.  Thursday I had dining room duty at school and got to see Alexee and her new friend.  They said it was too cold to go out for recess so they hung out inside with me between lunch groups.
6.  And Thursday afternoon we had friends over after school.  You can't see the girls, but they're in the very back seat.  We had a car load!  They all had a great time playing together.  Cole and Crosby put on matching backpacks and came downstairs for a snack.  The girls played Barbies in A's room most of the time.
7.  On Friday Crosby and I were excited to stay at home and work on some things around the house.  I printed invitations for our neighborhood Christmas brunch and Crosby put together a Mayflower picture.

Silver Dollar City Lights

Last weekend we took the kids to see the Christmas lights at Silver Dollar City.  I know that's early, but due to Lane's weird work schedule we decided this would be the best (and possibly only) weekend to go.

Crosby took a little nap on the drive to Branson
At the entrance to the park
Waiting for the boys to get back from riding "Fire in the Hole!"
This was Crosby's first time to ride it!  I was surprised that he was willing to try it, but it was so cute that he went.  Rhett wanted to go a second time, and there was no line, so I went back with him while Lane and Crosby stayed with Alexee.  Like me, she's not much of a roller coaster rider.
Family pic at the park
It was really a fun night.  The kids are at such great ages--I wish I could freeze time!  It's nice that Crosby is big enough to do most of the activities now.  He loved Grandfather's Mansion and Half-Dollar Holler, and everyone liked the Christmas parade. Lane and Rhett went by themselves for a while to ride roller coasters/bigger rides while I took A and C to ride things.  We all met up for the parade and then went to eat pizza.  :)
The Christmas decorations were great!  Everything looked so pretty.
